Neon Blonde

The handful of not terrible photos of this series were originally part of a Neon Blonde feature in the now defunct Skyscraper Magazine. The show as part of the annual CMJ Festival which featured (a now kind of insane line up of) dozens of artists across numerous small New York venues. I don't remember I got this most likely unpaid job that required me to drive from Delaware to Brooklyn and back in a night. There's a good bet that I begged Skyscraper to let me shoot something for them for free for my own exposure and to get more publications on my CV. I’d just graduated college that summer and been hired by Decibel Magazine a few weeks prior in a full time-ish, non-photography intern-type position. I recall being asked to give an explanation why I thought taking the day off to work for different magazine wasn't actually a “conflict of interest” for my new minimum wage, zero benefits role. Prior to this, I worked as a staff photographer at West Virginia University’s The Daily Athenaeum during my senior year, but other than that, my published credits had all been incidental up to this point. Photos that I’d taken on my own, shared with the band, then were used as press materials when needed. This was maybe my first freelance job? Also definitely my first time driving in New York. A living-the-dream night for me. Which is probably how I got too distracted to realize I'd taken multiple flash photos with a mirror in the background.
